Lionel Messi Denies Tax Fraud Charges

Lionel Messi has released a statement denying any wrongdoing after reports claiming the Spanish tax authorities are investigating allegations he and his father defrauded Spain of $5.3 million.

Messi and his father, Jorge Horacio, are suspected of filing fraudulent tax returns between 2007 and 2009.

The 25-year-old Argentina international, currently on international duty in South America, denied that he had done anything wrong.

“We have just known through the media about the claim filed by the Spanish tax authorities. We are surprised about the news, because we have never committed any infringement.

“We have always fulfilled all our tax obligations, following the advice of our tax consultants, who will take care of clarifying this situation.”

Lionel Messi, who is rated by Forbes as the world’s 10th highest-paid athlete earned $41.3 million to June this year; with $20.3 coming from his club salary and $21 million in endorsements.

The 25-year-old Messi has won four straight FIFA world player of the year awards. He has scored 133 goals for Barcelona over the last two seasons. The forward scored 60 goals in all competitions this season, leading Barcelona to the Spanish league title.

Raquel Amado, a state prosecutor, filed a fraud complaint Barca superstar against Lionel Messi, alleging the Barcelona and Argentina striker tried to conceal the extent of his real earnings and that he owes 4 million euros ($5.3 million) in back taxes.

Lionel Messi and his father Jorge Horacio, have been accused of evading tax charges over a three-year period from between 2006 and 2009.. Messi is alleged to owe nearly €4 million

Barca superstar Messi is gutted by accusations of tax evasion.

The Spanish tax authorities are investigating claims that the four-time Ballon d’Or winner and his father have avoided paying the charges due from sales of the 25-year-old’s image rights by operating through companies based outside of the country.

Messi quickly denied the claims in a statement released via his official Facebook account.

“We have learned through the media about the claim filed by the Spanish tax authorities.

“We are surprised about this news, because we have not committed any infringement. We have always fulfilled all of our tax obligations, following the advice of our tax consultants, who will take care of clarifying this situation.”

Under Spanish law, Messi could face a maximum penalty of six years in prison if found guilty.

“We’d like to express our surprise with the news published by several media outlets. Neither us, nor our client has received any notification from the prosecutor in relation to what has been reported,” a statement signed by Messi’s legal council Juarez reads. “As his legal and fiscal council, we will take all the appropriate legal action against the complaint of the prosecutor and we are confident that justice will prevail.”
