World Cup 2014 : England National Team Update
England manager Roy Hodgson seems to have lots of options for his final 23 squad to travel with him to the World Cup 2014 competition in Brazil this spring.
Three favorites who are vulnerable are Wayne Rooney, Steven Gerrard, and Jack Wilshere who will all hopefully be fit for the finals including Wilshere who is currently recovering from a broken foot.
However Wilshere has not excelled for the Three Lions since the friendly at Wembley against Brazil last year – and he may not be chosen by Hodgson.
Instead Hodgson may favor Southampton’s exciting 18-yeaar-old Luke Shaw.
Other choices in question are Ashley Cole, Frank Lampard and Michael Carrick.
At the moment, Hodson is focused on choosing the 11 who will battle Italy in Manaus for England’s opening Group D match on June 14th.
“I would say that three or four months ago you would have put together your 23 and you would have left out quite a few names who at the moment are very serious contenders,” Hodgson said.
“So the pressure does get greater and people have to accept that it is my job to pick the best 23, the best balanced 23,” continued Hodgson. “I’ve got to do it on the merits of the players and it’s not going to be like sometimes it’s been in the past when loyalty was rewarded.
Who will make the ruthless cuts ahead?
